# Mistral AI vs Munito AI

URL: https://munito.ai/compare/mistral

The Mistral AI API and Munito AI side by side for open models in the EU: regions, data retention, APIs, OCR, decision models and prices.

Choose Mistral AI for its own frontier models, for fine-tuning, and for a European brand a board already knows. Choose Munito AI for posted prices on each open model, an Anthropic-compatible API, OCR billed per page, decision models, and a region you can prove from a response header.

Facts and the catalogue checked on 2026-11-07. Mistral publishes one per-token price on its pricing page, so the table below is short on purpose. Check prices at the source.

The notable change this year is that Mistral is no longer only a model lab. Its catalogue now lists Z.ai GLM 5.3, GLM 5.3 Flash and DeepSeek V4.1 Flash 1017 beside its own Mistral Large 4, Mistral Small 4 and the Ministral 3 family. On the open models, the two platforms now sell the same thing.

## Prices

Standard tier, per million tokens, input / output, in USD.

| Model | Munito AI, EU | Mistral AI |
| ------------------------ | ------------- | ------------------- |
| DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017 | $0.30 / $1.20 | Not published       |
| GLM-5.3-Flash            | $0.15 / $0.50 | Not published       |
| Mistral Large            | Not offered   | $0.50 / $1.50       |
| Qwen3.8-27B              | $0.20 / $2.70 | Not offered         |
| DeepSeek-V4-Flash        | $0.11 / $0.28 | Not offered         |

Mistral's pricing page names one per-token rate, for Mistral Large, and describes the rest as "priced per million tokens" without the figures. Both platforms halve the price of a batch request, and both cut the cost of a cached prefix sharply: Mistral says up to 90 per cent, and our cached input on DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017 is $0.006 per million tokens.

If you are costing a project, that difference matters more than any single rate. Ours is a table you can read before you sign. See [Models and prices](https://docs.munito.ai/models).

## How to switch

Mistral offers OpenAI compatibility, so a client already pointed at an OpenAI-shaped endpoint moves with two lines:

```python
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(
    base_url="https://api.eu.munito.ai/inference/v1",
    api_key="munitoai_...",
)
```

If your code uses the Mistral SDK directly, the port is a real one: swap the client, map the message shapes, and re-test tool calls.

## Where Mistral AI is stronger

- **Its own models.** Mistral Large 4, Mistral Small 4 and Ministral 3 exist nowhere else, and the small ones are genuinely good for their size.
- **Fine-tuning**, which we do not offer.
- **A wider product line**: Codestral for code, Voxtral for speech and transcription, Shieldstral for moderation, Timestral for time series, and embeddings.
- **Brand.** A European buyer's board knows the name, and that shortens some conversations.
- **Self-hosting with the weights of a frontier European lab**, on the Enterprise plan: "Deploy self-hosted, in your private cloud, or on-premises; your data stays in your environment."

## Where Munito AI is stronger

- **A posted price for every model**, in a table, with cached and batch rates beside it.
- **The Anthropic Messages API** beside the OpenAI Chat Completions and Responses APIs, so Claude Code connects with no proxy. See [Compatibility](https://docs.munito.ai/compatibility).
- **A region you can prove.** Send to `https://api.eu.munito.ai` and read `munito-region: EUROPE` off the response. See [Regions](https://docs.munito.ai/regions).
- **Zero data retention by default**, stated in the Terms, rather than an opt-out. See [Data privacy](https://docs.munito.ai/data-privacy).
- **A DPA that applies with no signature**, at [legal.munito.ai/dpa](https://legal.munito.ai/dpa), and a [sub-processor list](https://trust.munito.ai/subprocessors) by region.
- **OCR billed per page** at $0.0044, so a document budget is a page count.
- **Decision models**: pplx-decider-v1.2 and Cygnet answer yes or no, choice and score questions through the [Decisions API](https://docs.munito.ai/api/createDecision).
- **Model choice without a house preference.** We have no weights to defend, so the catalogue changes when a better open model ships.

## What a security review will ask

Both are European companies, so the sovereignty conversation starts from the same place. The questions that separate them are concrete: which region serves the request, whether the answer is in a header or only in a contract, whether retention is a default or an opt-out, and what the self-hosting option costs.

Our answers are linked above, and the [security review guide](https://munito.ai/security-review) collects them. Our SOC 2 audit and ISO 27001 certification work are in progress.
